Cleansing is the removal of unwanted energy. It could be positive, negative or even just stale, neutral energy that is no longer needed. This is one of the most important parts of any spiritual work, especially for beginner practitioners because energy affects the way people feel, think , and act, and in this case, the out come of any workings you are doing. Cleansing yourself is just as important as cleansing your tools as it allows you and your tools to be more receptive to magick and its easier to channel your energy into your practice if your intentions are clear. Here are just a few of my favourite ways to cleanse my tools!
This is a great way to cleanse your tools and focus your intentions before and after spiritual workings, however it may not be the best way if you aren't very good at visualising or staying focussed, as these are needed in order to properly rid your mind of any unwanted thoughts and your tools of any unwanted energies. You don't need to meditate for a long time, just long enough to ground yourself and your thoughts so you are only focussing on thoughts you need in the now. This is your time to let it go. I usually visualise a white light creating a wall around me, blocking out unwanted thoughts and a dark coloured smoke exiting my body or my tools as I exhale, representing the unwanted energy.
Smoke cleansing is when you use the smoke of burning herbs, wood, incense etc to get rid of unwanted energy. It is a very simple way to cleanse your tools however it may trigger sensitive fire alarms. I like to run my tools through the smoke, coating the tool in it. I usually use frankincense incense to cleanse my crystals and cards.
One of my favourite cleansing crystals that I use daily is selenite. Not only does it cleanse a space, a person ,and other tools, it can also cleanse itself so you don't need to physically cleanse it after its done its job as you might with most other crystals. Other dark coloured crystals such as black obsidian, black tourmaline, and smokey quartz, are well known for their protective and absorbent properties so they will rid you of the unwanted energies too. However, you will need to cleanse these quite regularly or they will harbour the unwanted energy to a point where they may not be able to do their jobs anymore.
There are so many other ways to cleanse your tools but these are currently the ones I mostly use. A tip I can't stress enough is that YOU MUST KEEP THE WINDOWS OPEN WHILE YOU CLEANSE!! This gives the energy somewhere to go. If the windows stay shut the unwanted energy will just be bouncing around the room still and there will be absolutely no point in cleansing in the first place.
